How Insurance companies generally assess Van insurance drivers

It maybe no surprise that most insurance companies insist that you are a UK resident who holds a UK or the new EU driving licence. The vehicle should be registered to you and your occupation must be ‘Van’ish’ i.e. your occupation must be one that would need a van in order to carry out your daily duties, not an office worker who sits at his/her desk all day.

Track record would normally effect the premium along with a track record of refused insurance or insurance that has had special terms or conditions imposed.

The goods that you carry will also make a difference to the insurance premium. If you intend to carry flammable or hazardous goods then expect difficulty in obtaining van insurance quotes. The amount of goods will also effect insurance choice; with most insurance companies not insuring vans that carry goods in excess of 3.5 tonnes.

As with all cars you would need to disclose any modifications that you have made to the van. Improvements to performance are less likely to effect van insurance premiums when compared to car insurance premiums.

Occupations that will find it more difficult to get the best van insurance quotes are taxis, breakdown vehicles, ice cream vans and vans with seats in the rear compartment.
