High street insurance 'to make products more accessible'

British consumers will have more access to the insurance market thanks to a number of high street retailers deciding to sell the products, it has been claimed.

Peter Staddon, a spokesperson for the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba), said that allowing people greater access to products is "always good for the consumer".

His comments came after Prudential last week announced a deal with high street chemist Boots to sell health insurance products through the stores.

However, Mr Staddon stressed the importance for consumers buying insurance on the high street to understand what they were buying and what assistance would be available in the event of a claim needing to be made.

Retailers may not always be best-placed to offer advice on insurance products, he added, and customers need to "take more responsibility" for the products that they are buying.

He explained: "It's not like going into Tesco and taking a can of beans, reading the label and thinking: 'Fine, ok, I've got beans in tomato sauce'. It's not that easy unfortunately. Insurance contracts are very, very complicated products."
